As everyone with a food intolerance – or food preferences – will know, Christmas is one of those times when it can be very tricky to stick to a specific diet such as gluten- or dairy-free.
Luckily, we’ve rounded up the best quality food out there so that you can sit down to a delicious Christmas dinner with all the taste and without the hassle. By adding a simple twist to classic dishes, you’ll be sure not to miss out on the traditional festive flavours…
Mighty meaty (skip this if you’re vegetarian or vegan, obviously!)
The trick to creating the almighty turkey – the traditional Christmas table centrepiece – and to cater for all tastes is to keep an eye on how the turkey is cooked. To cater for dairy-free guests, replace regular butter or margarine with coconut butter or goats butter, such as this delicious one from Waitrose.
There are gluten free turkeys available but these are harder to come by so if you would rather avoid gluten completely (as some turkey’s pre-basting will already include gluten) why not fill up on the other delicious dishes? Some great meaty feasts include gluten-free pork sausages with bacon, herbs and red wine, available from Sainsbury’s.
Bacon is another festive table favourite, and the unsmoked British thin cut back bacon from Waitrose’s essential range is up there with the best:
It’s all gravy
When it comes to making the gravy, you can buy gluten-free flour from Tesco, http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=284181782. You could also opt to leave the flour out completely which will make the gravy thinner but still retain the flavour. If you would rather have a thicker gravy, you can also replace the flour with gluten-free cornflour, such as this one from Ocado.
Get stuffed
Stuffing is one of the main players in the Christmas dinner. Get rid of the gluten by preparing your stuffing with gluten-free bread mix, such as cornbread. If you’re concerned about a lack of flavour, just add a little bit of extra spice – thyme and oregano are some of the best. If you’d rather buy your stuffing readymade, Ocado have produced a delicious option with Hale & Hearty Free From Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix. For the lactose-intolerant, substitute the butter in the stuffing with duck fat, available at Waitrose.
Bit on the side
Christmas is all about indulgence and the meal wouldn’t be complete without some delicious side dishes. Duchy Organic British Free Range Pork Chipolatas with Honey and Rosemary are available from Waitrose and will make a delicious duo, along with Tesco’s Free From Savoury Party selection.
